The Vermont Swim Association (VSA), like so many youth organizations, is faced with challenging choices for the summer of 2020. The VSA Executive Board, in working with recommendations from the VSA Covid-19 Action Committee, has made the decision to cancel the Vermont State Swimming Championships meet scheduled for August 1-2, 2020 at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Jct.
The VSA conducted our bi-annual board meeting on May 12th via Zoom. We shared our collective stories of an unknown future for summer swimming in Vermont and were unified in our commitment to keep our Vermont swimming families safe. A Covid-19 Action Committee was formed and has since been working diligently to play out all the possible scenarios this summer, assessing the latest recommendations from our Governor and other leading bodies of health and safety. The VSA Executive Board has also been in conversations with our insurance company and it was determined that the policy prohibits the coverage of events during a pandemic. The VSA encourages and supports decisions at the league level to cancel all league championships, tri meets and dual meets. The landscape of safety required in Vermont to keep the positive trends of decreased transmission of this virus requires us to limit contact points and to work with our pool managing organizations to maintain safe distancing guidelines, low numbers in public gatherings and clean shared surfaces. The VSA board and committees will work together with the Champlain Valley Swim League, Southern Vermont Swim League and the Green Mountain Swim League in the coming weeks to support virtual competition opportunities in the state for those swimmers who are able to get in the water this summer. We look forward to the time when we can all gather again on the pool deck to coach, cheer, officiate and time our swimmers, but for now we will focus on how to provide a safe recreational outlet to our shared communities.
